L: “You’re in luck!”
A: “… hmm?”
L: “wait.. why are you in luck…”
A: “I don’t know.. I was saying I made cookies?”
L: “Oh yeah! You’re in luck cuz I can eat your cookies!”
L: “What…? My sugar-detox doesn’t start until tomorrow”
A: “Oh. Yay… Lucky me...”
Currently, we are following the 80/20 Paleo guidelines. If you are not yet Paleo & are interested in trying it out, this could be your 21-day challenge instead (Find some basic Paleo Guidelines here).
For me personally, participating in a standard 21-day-sugar-detox didn’t make a lot of sense… here’s why: I’ve already been very disciplined with my eating habits & am barely eating much sugar as it is. I’m not quite sure how much I would benefit from a sugar detox, since now, my goals are a little bit different than Anthony’s.
Anthony chose the Bulletproof Diet by Dave Asprey which is a perfect choice, more strict than what I want to do, but is a form of a sugar-detox in itself. Both mine & Anthony’s choices are by nature their own sugar-detox, just each with a different spin.
What I am choosing is a little closer to the 4HB diet; a 4-Hour-Body approach makes more sense to me for my pure desire of more physical definition. For those who are not familiar with the 4-Hour-Body, Tim Ferriss, like Dave Asprey, is an awesome bio-hacker, who used his own bodyas a guinea pig to experiment with food sensitivity, insulin spikes, as well as found effective grounds for physical results & rapid fat loss. His book explains that eating only protein & vegetables 6 out of 7 days each week & then having a “trick” day (1x/week) will provide your body with the perfect insulin spike to trick it into burning more fat for the remainder of the week.
Because you’re eating only protein & vegetables for days on end, your body may have the urge to go into survival-mode & try to store fat. This “trick day” is to remind your body not to do this. The huge insulin spike will cause a shock to your system, tricking your body to work harder to burn off fat the rest of the week instead of storing.
The reason why I’m tweaking & making it my own is because Tim Ferriss doesn’t really mention Paleo in his book: he doesn’t focus on qualitynutrient-dense proteins (i.e. beans are okay), & he allows you to eat all the pastries, grains, gluten, & beer you want on your cheat day (Beans, pastries, grains, gluten, beer are big no-no’s on Paleo).
Yes, I personally can vouch for this diet since this is what I did before I found Paleo in early-2012. And although MUCH better than the average American diet, this still isn’t up to my current standards anymore, so I want to take it a step further & put the following spin:
Day 1-6: Eat ONLY protein, vegetables, & good fats – the Paleo way
Quality nutrient-dense proteins are important, no legumes allowed, & NO sugar of any form(no fruit, no honey). If you slip up, start again at day 1. No “trick” day until completing 6 days of no-sugar at a time.
Day 7: Sugar!!! – the Paleo way
Create an insulin spike by eating Paleo sweets, i.e. fruit, honey, maple syrup, paleo-cookies, chocolate, avocado brownies.
Yum! Eat AS MUCH of these as you want – go crazy! The more damage, the better!
* Red wine is okay during the week. Ferriss found no negative impact if you limit yourself to 1-2 glasses.
No calorie-counting. No portion control. Ever. Whether it’s day 3 of no-sugar or your “trick” day, don’t waste your time.
In total, this 21-day challenge will consist of 18 days of strict sugar elimination & 3 days (1x/week) of “trick” days.
I don’t like to use the word “cheat” because it gives off a sense of negativity. If you feel the need to ever cheat on your diet, you’re not doing it right. This is one of the reasons so many people fall in love with Paleo. This diet is so easy & sustainable because you’re not depriving yourself of anything, eating real, amazing, delicious food that satisfies you, & feel wonderful & healthy! There should be no reason why you feel the need to “cheat”. Asking me if I ever feel the need to have a “cheat” day & just indulge in a big bowl of pasta is like asking me if I ever feel like cheating on my boyfriend. If you’re satisfied, you have no reason to look elsewhere. The same way I am completely satisfied in my relationship, I am completely satisfied in my diet & never feel the need to have a “cheat” day. Thus, I am calling my permission-to-have-sugar day a “trick” day instead.
I would like some more definition, tone my arms/legs, & gain more muscle.
I’ve had such great success with the 4-Hour-Body in the past & am very much looking forward to my 21-days (starting today)!
